5 Channel Home Amplifier
What do I need to get more power out of my home theater system?

I have a home theater system with Dolby 5.1 (120W per channel, 140W designated sub). What do I need to get more power out of my system? Sorry if this is a noob question. I want to keep my Dolby surround setup… can I just slap on an amplifier? How do I hook it up (after the receiver). Do they make amplifiers that handle these multipule channels?
I also have 4ohm speakers? If I decide to upgrade receivers and cannot get 4ohms, do I need to go up or down in resistance to prevent damage?

You can add out-board amplification only if your receiver has 5 RCA outputs for each speaker. Usually you only find this on higher end units and the 5-channel amps start at about $800 and go to $4,500

If the 120 watts per channel is an honest measurement, that is usually lots of power for a home theater.

As the previous poster said – you might need a subwoofer upgrade for the deep, powerful bass that impresses people.

But do some things first:

- Tell your receiver all your speakers are SMALL to route the power-hungry low frequency sounds to the sub.

- Get a Radio Shack SPL meter and use test-tones or a setup DVD (Avia, Digital Video Essentials) to level adjust your speakers.

Generally you calibrate with:

: Speakers at 75db
: subwoofer at 83-85db

This often solves sound problems. (Note: You calibrate at these high volumes, but you dont keep the volume control at this point for normal watching.)

Subwoofer:

Locate the sub 1/3 to 2/5 along the longest un-broken wall of the room to allow wall reflections to help enhance the bass.
