Need help with insane light-switch issue?

OK. Here’s the deal. I just moved into a new apartment. Mostly, everything is OK. But I have a weird issue with a pair of light-switches. When I walk out of my kitchen, I walk into a passage that leads to the bedrooms. There is a set of three lights in the ceiling, in the middle of the passage. So, you switch on the lights from the kitchen end and switch off at the bedroom end. Here’s the problem. You can jump up and down and do the boogie from the bedroom end. The light still switches on and off at the kitchen end. BUT if you switch off the light at the kitchen end, it is doom and disaster! Now, you can’t switch on the light at the bedroom end. Is the light-switch haunted? If not, what can I reasonably do, to fix it?

you can control one light from 2 or more locations if you use SPDT switches (if it is more than 2, rest will have to be DPDT). see picture for details:

http://www.arisys.sk/files/img/inteligentne_domy1.jpg

in this picture 4 switches are shown (the outer two are SPDT, inner two are DPDT but you could also use DPDT for everything).

note that connections between any two switches require 2 wires (one is “on” one is “off” and each switch simply swaps them). if you have one of them disconnected (or if someone replaced switch for SPST) you will have exactly the problem you describe.

SPST = single pole single throw (just on-off switch)
SPDT = single pole double throw (both positions are on, if you only use one, it is like SPST)
DPDT = double pole double throw (this is basically two SPDTs operated together)

pole is “working” contact (one that switches). throws indicate to how many positions each pole can connect to.

i’d recommend to call an electrician
