biscuit joints – how to get perfect results?

I have been joining planks for several furniture projects with my biscuit joiner – size 10 and 20s spaced every 10 cm or so. Invariably, the result is always with a little ridge at the join where the boards have not come together well. I use a flat benchtop and clamps to hold them and I test the joints before I glue them and the fit is always tight. I suspect that the cutting process is to blame. How do you get perfect cuts across such long planks of wood?

If the boards fit together perfectly before gluing, there is nothing wrong with your cutting. A perfect dry fit means that the biscuits holes are deep enough, and that’s all you want from a biscuit hole. The problem is caused by too many biscuits and insuficient strength in the clamping.

I can’t tell you how many biscuits you need because I don’t know the length of the joint or the application. But here is an example. If I am gluing two boards edge to edge to make a wider board and the boards are 15cm wide and 1m long and the application is a bookcase top or shelf, I will need 2 biscuits. If the application will involve more stress on the joint, biscuits can be added, but there is never a need for one every 10cm.

The biscuits expand as they soak up moisture from the glue. That smashes them into the slots, creating great strength. But that expansion also can push the boards apart if the clamping is not strong enough. In the edge to edge example above, I would be using pipe clamps. They are extremely strong. If the application connects the edge of one board to the flat of another board, you can’t use pipe clamps, but your substitute has to have sufficient holding power to prevent the expanding biscuits from separating the boards.

But that doesn’t mean the clamps should be extremely tight. They should be tight enough to squeeze out a tiny bead of glue all along the joint, and no tighter. But with the correct amount of pressure established while the glue is wet, the clamp selection and setup must be such that the boards cannot be shoved apart by expanding biscuits. 2 biscuits per meter won’t have the power to move your boards apart against any reasonable clamping.

So your solution is a combination of reducing the number of biscuits per meter and designing the clamping so that no amount of expansive pressure can move the boards.
