Furniture Restoration And Repair
Need help creatively displaying my before and after pictures of my repair work outside of my shop?

I am trying to attract more attention to my shop. I have a small furniture repair and restoration business in a very high foot traffic area. I have many before and after pictures and need an idea for an outdoor display (that can be taken inside at night) to get the attention of people walking by. I have a limited outdoor space (sidewalk width) and also 1 display window that is 3′ wide by 8 ‘ tall. I would like to make use of both the window and the sidewalk area. In addition I also have 2 large panes of glass on my french doors in the front. i have the capabilities to build a simple display for the photos for outside which is my main focus. Any ideas as to how to maximize my visual display would be great. Thanks!

Well, for starters, I’d have the photos blown up to at least 12×18 or 16×20. You can do that for less than $15 each if you shop around (I know Snapfish.com does it that cheap, maybe cheaper elsewhere – They also do “collage posters” – any number of photos, you could put your before and after on one 20×30 for $20).

Then I’d get the ones that would be outside laminated. Some of the places that print photos will do that for you – or even print them on weatherproof paper.

Then – this is the fun part – I’d contact a local high school and create a contest with the art department(or if it’s a technical school, they may have a design department). Have the students design a window display and a sidewalk display (do you have wall space outside? Perhaps a poster or simulated window would be the way to go to reduce sidewalk congestion).

Give the students photocopies of the pictures, labeled with the dimensions of each picture. Give them information about the window size, other display sizes (also, if the display window has any depth available for 3-D stuff (such as small furniture items, etc, tell them that). Give them the address of the location so they can see it themselves, and maybe they’ll even come up with novel or better ideas for outdoor display. If you want, tell them what your budget is – which will include any supplies and materials used in the display.

Give them a set amount of time to prepare a proposal and tell them that the winner’s design will be used, and the winner may choose to have their name and photo featured in the corner of the window. Then you and the art teacher can review them all and choose the winner. If you want, add in a small ($50?) cash prize.

Some students may even want to do the assembly of the display themselves – perhaps window painting, or building display boards, etc.

The bonus to all this is that a lot of students (and therefore parents) will hear about your business and you’ll be getting free advertising. You can even do a press release for your local paper after the winner is chosen and the display is complete – it’ll look like you’re congratulating the kid but you’ll also be getting even more publicity!!!

Have fun!

PS – the art teacher may even want to make it an assignment – that way you’d have a LOT of entries guaranteed!)
